β
How
to
deal
with
it.
If you ever look around and find that your life is filled with bad news, youβre not
alone! Scrolling on social media or watching TV morning news programs, never before
in our modern history have we been bombarded with information and constant disastrous
stories like we are these days.
Weβre forced to live in a state of distress. Many studies say that bad news is addictive,
especially in the digital age where we can access news and information anywhere,
anytime. So itβs no surprise that many people find themselves spending hours mindlessly
scrolling on their screens and forgetting what they were meant to be doing. The
over usage of digital devices and the constant negative news can cause health issues
and affects our behaviour, leading to sleeplessness, loss of concentration, lack
of patience, anxiety, anger and depression.
If youβre think youβre experiencing digital disaster fatigue, there are some things
you can try, ranging from easy steps to more challenging ideas.

Limit
Your
Intake
Like food, the over consumption of information can be overwhelming and unhealthy. The
first and easiest step to deal with information and sensory overload is to limit
your intake. Start by scheduling your personal screen time, for example, one hour
in the morning and another hour in the evening. During working hours, put your
smart phone away where you will not see it to avoid distraction and try not to
browse your phone during lunch breaks. If mobile messaging applications are part
of your work, try to turn off the notification sound or limit the number of the
notifications if possible. This can help prevent your brain from being overstimulated
and help you to focus on your activities or tasks better. At night, try not to
use your devices and switch them off at least two hours before bedtime to unwind,
slow your brain down and prepare yourself for a good-quality sleep.

Call
for
a
Break
If you still find yourself being overwhelmed with whatβs going on around you, taking
a break from social media might be a good option. From my own experience, removing
the social media applications from my smart phone and temporary deactivating my
social media accounts are the best ways to escape. Then you can spend your free
time with old-school, pre-digital recreational activities such as painting or drawing,
doing puzzles, or making handmade crafts to add a bit of quiet enjoyment and to
feed your brain some positive vibes!
