Zero Waste Living 101
Nowadays, people are more conscious about the horrid consequences of global warming
and try to live sustainably. Natural materials and reusable items have become part
of the modern lifestyle. If you are an eco-friendly fan and want to go deeper in
adopting sustainable practices, here are some easy tips on how to reduce your household
waste.

|
Apart from your wallet, keys, mobile phone and COVID-19 protectors, please add reusable
bottles, a foldable grocery tote bag and a recycled container in your bag as part
of your essentials before going out and about. People tend to do a bit of unplanned
shopping or buy food and drink while they’re out. So be prepared, you might need
them.

Bea Johnson, a pioneer of the Zero Waste Home movement since the 1990s, has initiated
the 5 methods on how to start living waste free, which are Refuse, Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle and Rot. Refuse what you don’t need. Reduce what you do need. Reuse what
you consume. Recycle what you can’t refuse, reduce and reuse. Then, Rot or compost
the rest.

Avoid supermarkets and try to shop for your food at small shops, fresh markets, farmer’s
markets or suppliers that allow you to bring your own containers and buy the amount
you need. Apart from getting fresh and seasonal produce which are likely to be
free from plastic wrap, stickers or the unnecessary packing, you will also support
small businesses and producers which are the backbone of our local economy.

There’re many household products that you can get from refill shops, such as shampoo,
conditioner, dish cleaner and laundry liquid. All you need to do is bring your
own container to refill the products at the shop. Opt for a bar of soap rather
than liquid soap, as it requires little to no packaging. And some classic household
substances such as baking soda and white vinegar can be used as cleaning heroes.
